Why Disconnecting at Camp Benefits Younger Generations

In an age defined by digital connectivity, the importance of disconnecting from technology has never been more pronounced, especially for the younger generations. Camp Reece recognizes the profound impact of unplugging and embraces it as an integral part of the camp experience. As campers step away from screens and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of our surroundings, they embark on a journey of self-discovery, personal growth, and genuine connection.

Setting Boundaries:
At Camp Reece, we’re primarily device free. Campers always have an option to call home if needed but otherwise they have phone access for 30 minutes 2-3x a week. Apart from limited phone usage, Campers write home letters and the staff give weekly updates to parents. By informing campers in advance, they are given the opportunity to mentally prepare for this break from technology. Engaging alternatives, such as group activities and arts and crafts, are scheduled all day, ensuring that campers remain stimulated and connected with their surroundings.

The Power of Connection:
At Camp Reece, the emphasis is on fostering genuine connections among campers. While disconnecting from technology may initially seem challenging, even brief breaks yield significant benefits. Campers emerge from these digital respites with enhanced social skills and a treasure trove of cherished memories that will last a lifetime. Camp staff play a pivotal role in demonstrating the value of disconnecting from technology by actively participating in device-free activities alongside campers.

How Families Can Help:
Pre-camp communications serve as a platform to emphasize the significance of device-free time for campers. Designating specific times of the day or week where devices are put away encourages children to engage in alternative activities such as reading, outdoor play, or creative pursuits. Leading by example is crucial, as parents who demonstrate a healthy balance between screen time and other activities set a positive precedent for their children. Additionally, involving children in the decision-making process regarding technology use fosters a sense of responsibility and ownership. By prioritizing face-to-face interactions, outdoor adventures, and shared family activities, parents can instill in their children an appreciation for the value of disconnecting from technology and embracing the present moment.
